Fresh Air Fitness is an award-winning, provider of outdoor gym equipment for schools, parks, NHS trusts, redevelopment projects and more.
We have been designing, manufacturing and installing outdoor gyms in the UK since 2007 and as part of our range we have incorporated three key pieces which support cardio, strength and functional training for people with reduced mobility or a disability.
The Disabled Arm & Pedal Bike is compact, easy to use and great for wheelchair users and anyone with reduced mobility.
It is a low impact, seated, exercise solution focused on cardio to get your blood pumping and your heart rate going. It builds muscle strength, burns calories and improves stamina.
To get started, if you are exercising from your wheelchair, securely apply your brakes or otherwise immobilise your chair. Try to sit up tall while exercising and use your abs to maintain good posture.
If you are able to exercise your lower body and legs, go at your own pace using the pedals. The cycling motion helps to increase blood flow to your body and oxygen to your lungs, whilst building strength and stamina.
Benefits of outdoor gym equipment for disability or reduced mobility
Wheelchair users and people with limited or reduced mobility are advised to get involved in some form of daily exercise to increase overall fitness, mental happiness and quality of life.
Our range of disabled outside gym equipment has been specifically designed to be accessible to all, safe to use and easy to operate in an outdoor setting.
Combined, our equipment covers the full range of fitness opportunities from cardio to strength training with the added benefits of being outdoors in the natural daylight and fresh air.
Our self-weighted units on the Disabled Combo are excellent for low impact muscular development and strength building and our Disabled Arm & Pedal Bike is perfect for increasing the heart rate which is good as a warm-up, cool down or improving stamina. Each piece of outdoor gym equipment comes with integrated labels etched with white writing to aid users who are visually impaired.
Disabled Combo – Pull Down Challenger & Chest Press
The Disabled Combo is a multi-functional piece of outdoor gym equipment with a pull-down challenger on one side and a chest press on the other. Great for building strength and functional fitness, this piece of equipment preps you for real-life and daily activity such as lifting, loading, pushing and pulling. Functional exercises also greatly decrease your risk of everyday life injuries, especially in the smaller muscle groups which get used a lot.
To get started with the Pull-Down Challenger, lock your wheelchair into position, grip both handles with your hands and then steadily pull down towards you in a smooth motion. Similar to a lateral pull down machine, which you might find in an indoor gym, the Pull Down Challenger targets upper body muscles & uses your own body weight as the resistance.
On the other side of the Disabled Combo, you will find the Chest Press. This is a great way to target and refine all of the muscles in the chest. To get started, grip the handles, exhale on the way out and inhale on the return. Keep the movement nice and smooth and controlled. By repeating several sets you will strengthen and develop the muscles in your chest. This is a great exercise if you are beginner, coming back to exercise or even a bit of an expert - perfect for all abilities!
