EDUCATION - PRIMARY SCHOOLS
“We always look for things that will enrich the children’s learning as much as possible and so we used the funding for the project specifically because we felt it was so important for their healthy lifestyles.” David Harris, Headteacher
Ravenscote Community School is a mixed junior school with more than 600 children on their register. The school wanted the children to be more active throughout the day, especially during break times.
“We considered an outdoor gym because we’d seen them at other schools and we wanted the children to be more active at break times and lunchtimes.” David Harris, Headteacher
To cater for the large number of children the gym needed to have a high number of user stations whilst staying within budget. It was important that the new gym didn’t encroach on space already used by the school for various learning activities. It needed to be located close to the playground to maximize use during break-times and needed to be close to their daily mile track to give the children an incentive to finish their daily mile, allowing them to spend time on the equipment at the end. The school also wanted the new gym to give the children real variety.
Fresh Air Fitness supplied and installed a nine-piece outdoor gym, all from our Children’s KS1 & 2 range providing 18 user stations. Cardiovascular equipment designed to elevate the heart rate, getting the children moving and burning energy. And strength equipment to facilitate whole body strength building, tone, balance and coordination.
“There was a mass of excitement when the gym was first installed, all the children wanted to go on it. And still now at break time and lunch time, there is never a piece that is not being used. They absolutely love it.” said David Harris, “It’s all about promoting healthy lifestyles. We’re seeing children that at break-times might have sat around are now queuing up to get active, which is great. The more we can get active the better.
“The gym has transformed our morning break and lunch break. It enables our children to engage in physical exercise rather than just standing around.” said Paul Morley, Deputy Head Teacher, “Fresh Air Fitness really were wonderful. The installation was impeccable, we had plenty of advice, excellent communication, they were fantastic! All children enjoy using the equipment, from the most athletic to those least engaged in PE, they all enjoy it and have enjoyed it since the moment it was installed.” “Since the gym was installed, the biggest difference has been to the children’s free time. They’re a lot more active, they all want to come up and use it, they’re very keen and enthusiastic”, Mr Simmons “The gym is really easy to use, I give the children the freedom to use it as they see fit. The children challenge each other and try out different things”
“We chose to work with fresh air fitness because they offered best value for money.” said David Harris, “The process from start to finish was really easy, really smooth. From getting the quote through to completion. The actual installation took no time at all. We were really pleased with how speedy the whole process it was because it enabled the children to get involved in it as quickly as possible.”
"I would recommend Fresh Air Fitness as a company. They are really easy to deal with, the equipment is first class and everything from start to finish has been absolutely fantastic. It’s a great resource and we want more!”

Since the gym was installed, the biggest difference has been to the children’s free time. They are a lot more active, they all want to use it. We’ve also incorporated the outdoor gym into our daily mile programme. When the children have completed their daily mile, they are given some free time to spend time on the equipment which they really enjoy. The children have already shown a lot of physical improvement, they are much more determined to not give up and work for a sustained length of time.
