Having looked at the many ways in which this grant could be used, their strategy was to invest part of the funding into outdoor gym equipment. The school were required to source quality assured, safe equipment for pupils and so they chose to work with Fresh Air Fitness
Higher Openshaw Community School wanted to install the gym into a small area of unused ground between a larger field where the pupils regularly play football and other sports and the school building. Not only did they require a outdoor gym that could be used during PE lessons, but also for break-times and after school sports clubs and holiday clubs.
Working with the school's PE coordinator, we developed a range of fitness equipment that would burn energy and enhance the cardiovascular health of the children. This included the Double Air Walker, 2 x Arm and Pedal Bikes and 2 x Elliptical Cross Trainers for cardiovascular training, strengthening the heart and toning the muscles across the entire body. In just 2 days the equipment was installed at the school using a layout that would encourage motivation, interaction and fun. Each piece can be used in a variety of ways. Pupils can focus on using the whole body, building cardio strength and stamina, or focus on legs, arms or core separately, building tone and muscle strength.
