Surrey Borough Council has a commitment to providing residents with high quality parks, greenspaces and play areas and invest continually in the high provision of social and recreational healthy spaces. Frimley Green Recreation Ground provides free to use playground, tennis courts, football, and cricket pitches for residents. The park provides a hub for social activity in the community, bringing people together to engage with healthy activities in a natural environment. Exercise is an important part of a healthy community as undertaking exercise improves physical and mental wellbeing and promotes healthy sleep patterns.
An opportunity was identified to enhance the existing offering at Frimley Green Recreation Ground with an outdoor gym facility.
The council engaged with the community with a thorough consultation process to gauge if there was a local appetite for this provision. The consultation process revealed strong support for the installation of an outdoor gym with 88% of respondents responding favourably. Frimley Green ward councillor Cllr Jacques Olmo applied to the Local Community Improvement Fund (LCIF) for the equipment to be installed at Frimley Green Recreation Ground. These grants are funded through Community Infrastructure Levy payments (payments made for development taking place in the Borough).
Surrey Borough Council wanted an outdoor gym installation that was sympathetically coloured to blend seamlessly with the natural rural aesthetic of the recreation ground and enhance the natural features of the outdoor space. They also wanted easy to use equipment that was accessible for all users, regardless of their fitness level or ability. Hard wearing equipment which is built to last was an essential requirement.
Fresh Air Fitness was selected to deliver the outdoor gym due to our great value, long lasting and high-quality solutions, and our 17 years' experience. Their package included three easy-to-use cardio pieces: the Bicycle, the Rider and the Air Skier, plus strength equipment including the Triple Pull Up and Seated Leg Press. Furthermore, the Double Sit Up Bench was chosen to provide a range of core exercises to complete a full body workout solution. The equipment was supplemented by a red and brown rubber surface, a colour theme designed to be sympathetic with the natural surroundings. The surfacing was laid on top of a compacted stone base, which assists with drainage as well as providing an effective base for the surfacing.
To help embed the new outdoor gym in the local community, Fresh Air Fitness provided an exciting and engaging launch event attended by the Surrey Heath Mayor and local councillors. This induction morning promoted the new gym equipment to encourage utilisation and demonstrated the equipment to local users.

Outdoor gyms can be found in local parks, green spaces, next to community centres, along trim trails and beside children’s playgrounds.
