Carwarden House is a special school for students between the ages of 11 and 19 with a statement or Education, Health & Care Plan (EHCP) of special educational needs. The SEN school prides themselves on the wellbeing of their pupils, striving to make continual advances in this area, ‘I had been researching and looking at ways of improving wellbeing for our young people. There is strong evidence between the connection of exercise and wellbeing and the outdoor gym was perfect for this’. Assistant Head Teacher, Deborah Proudfoot. After a thorough search of suppliers, they chose to work with Fresh Air Fitness.
Students that attend the school have a wide range of needs including moderate learning difficulties, autism, down syndrome, speech, language and communication needs and other conditions associated with learning difficulties. The outdoor gym needed to support the wellbeing of all the children. It needed to provide a space for them to release energy, help some children to manage themselves emotionally and to provide suitable PE classes that would improve fitness.
We supplied and installed a 6-piece outdoor gym from our selection of SEN Products. From our Children’s KS3 & 4 range we designed and installed a range of products that each provided their own benefits. Cardiovascular equipment including a Double Air Walker, Double Rower, 2 Bicycles and a Double Cross Country Skier. Each piece is very simple to use and provides a cardio workout, strengthening the heart muscles. The Combination Chest Press and Pull Down Challenger, provides upper body strengthening exercises. “The ordering process was very simple and easy. Someone came out to discuss our options and put together a package for us. This was ordered and a date for installation agreed. Installation needed to be in school holidays and this was arranged too. The installation was great! All went very smoothly.” Each piece can be used individually or in pairs. “Using the equipment alone provides a place for pupils to spend some time to regain composure and motivation for learning” says Deborah. Pupils can also enjoy working together in groups of up to 10 for PE lessons.
