The Cardinal Wiseman Secondary School Outdoor Gym Project
The Cardinal Wiseman School is a comprehensive secondary school with sixth form located in Greenford, London. The school approached Fresh Air Fitness with a vision to enhance their existing activity opportunities for all pupils by transforming an otherwise unused area of land into a state-of-the-art fitness zone.
The challenge was to design and install a selection of outdoor gym equipment pieces to complement a new running track, creating a brand new, multi-use, exercise zone. The space had to be both fun and engaging to encourage regular and enthusiastic use by all students.
Fresh Air Fitness worked with both the school and a third-party running track provider to ensure a seamless end-to-end project and we installed a range of outdoor gym equipment which can accommodate up to 15 users at once. The equipment chosen covered the full cross section of physical fitness from cardio and balance to flexibility and strength. Static pieces included Chin Up Bars – with its functional training frame for body weight exercise - and a Leg Lift Station - with its multiple handles, to build strength in the core, thighs, arms and shoulders.
The team also installed moving strength pieces which included the popular Combi: Pull Down and Chest Press with its back to back seats that offer a great way for two students to workout at once, motivating and encouraging each other. Muscle groups targeted using this piece of equipment include the chest, shoulders and arms when using one side and the lats and arms when using the other side.
Variable resistance pieces were also included from the Fresh Air Fitness Resistance Range. Pieces from this range have an integrated dial which allows the user to change the intensity based on their capability. The Shoulder Press and Bench Press provide upper body exercises, whilst the variable Leg Press and Squat Station concentrate on lower body functions.
The final result was a complete transformation and is immediately popular with pupils and staff who now have a high-quality activity area which can used be used by everyone for years and years to come.
