Across the UK, Fitness as an industry continues to grow in popularity. Thanks to ‘PE with Joe Wicks’, the plethora of free fitness apps and the popularity of fitness as a lifestyle on social media, more and more young people are taking ownership of their personal health, fitness and well-being. This is great news for young people, as regular exercise is key to good physical and mental health.

Physical activity guidelines for teens currently recommend one hour or more of moderate to strong physical activity per day with a heavy focus on cardiovascular exercise and school-based physical activity is ideal as schools are in a unique position because children are in ‘learning mode’.
Regular exercise can have a profoundly positive impact on depression, anxiety, and ADHD. It also relieves stress, improves memory and helps you sleep better.
A recent survey by University College London, which used data from 4,257 adolescents, revealed that too much time sitting still – sedentary behaviour – is linked to an increased risk of depressive symptoms in adolescents.
Findings showed that young people who were inactive for large proportions of the day throughout adolescence faced a greater risk of depression by age 18.
The report concluded that we should be encouraging teens to move more, and to sit less, as it’s good for both physical and mental health.
Stress slows down the brain’s ability to process information, and it becomes more difficult to concentrate and focus, which can greatly impact exam performance.
Exercise ramps up the body’s production of serotonin and dopamine, the feel-good brain chemicals which helps promote a happier and healthier mood. Even a short 10-minute exercise session can improve your mental and physical state. This physical activity in turn improves your cognitive health—helping you to think, learn, problem-solve better.
It is also proven that exercise helps to improve your memory, so exercising around exam time can only benefit those last-minute notes you need to memorise!
