The clocks went forward at the end of March, while provisional Met Office figures showed that, for England, that month was the sunniest since 1910. It was also the sunniest March on record for the UK as a whole, leading the organisation to describe the meteorological spring so far as dry and warm as well as, of course, sunny.

It’s a time for wearing lighter clothes, thinking about (and looking forward to) summer holidays and loving the longer hours of daylight.
Spring also offers the perfect chance to rethink your fitness routine. You may have spent the past six or seven months cooped up in an indoor gym, but now could be the ideal time to embrace the energy and sense of renewal of the season and get a full body workout at your local Park Gym
There are many ways of doing this, from going for a walk in the countryside or jogging in your local park to trying some open-air yoga. You may well be surprised at what a change just stepping outside and into the fresh air can make.
Here are some things to consider this spring for outdoor workouts:
It’s always worth changing around your fitness schedule every now and again, and the nicer weather could allow you to try a new activity or group, for example a regular kickaround on your local rec, paddleboarding or joining a cycling club.
Whether you’re keen to build strength or stamina or lose a few pounds before the summer, consider setting some fresh goals. As always, these will need to be specific and realistic. Think about using a fitness app or journal to monitor progress and stay accountable.
Is it time for a new pair of trainers? Do you need sunglasses, a hat or a hydration pack? How about swapping warmer winter gear for lighter, breathable, moisture-wicking materials? (Especially if you have been running or hiking all winter.)
Enhance your nutrition with fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables, from leafy greens and berries to asparagus. Equally, don’t neglect the importance of proper hydration as the weather warms up. Build in foam rolling, stretching and maybe some mindfulness activities such as meditation into your new exercise regime. Set your weekly plan – and stick to it.
The benefits of working out outdoors are well documented, and we’ve previously written about the benefits of training outside rather than indoors.
One of the best ways of working out under the sky is in an outdoor gym. Local, flexible, typically open all hours and free to use, what’s not to love! What’s more, they’re friendly, sociable places where people gently encourage each other – and they suit users of all ages, abilities and fitness levels while providing a full-body workout, whether your goal is to build cardio health, muscular strength or flexibility.
If you’ve enjoyed getting out and about over the recent Easter holiday, perhaps with your children or other family members, it may have inspired you to spend more time outside over the forthcoming Bank Holidays and the long summer break. Find your nearest outdoor gym so you can all enjoy an outdoor workout.
