Fitness sessions are increasingly moving outside, according to a report by Gym Desk which looks into how we’re working, almost 60% of us choosing to train outdoors.
It’s perhaps not surprising that the market for outdoor gym equipment is forecast to grow from $3.08bn in 2024 to $5.55bn by 2032 as reported in Open PR. Meanwhile, CAGR (or growth rate) is predicted to be around 7.64% throughout the same time period.

When you consider all the benefits of working out in the fresh air, it’s easy to understand why these outdoor facilities are so popular globally. There is more awareness of the benefits of regular exercise, along with an increased focus on mental health and wellbeing.
Outdoor gyms encourage communities to live healthier lives without paying membership fees, while also offering a sociable spot. Well designed outdoor gyms are inclusive and provide scope for a variety of different workout styles and training needs. The exercise equipment is designed to withstand whatever the weather throws at it. The equipment range might include options for cardio, resistance or strength; pull-up or parallel bars, benches or outdoor exercise bikes, or training rigs to provide a full-body workout.
Outdoor gyms can be set up anywhere, from parks to recreation grounds or other open spaces. Such as; urban areas, schools and residential settings, among many other locations.
Fitness and wellbeing is now increasingly considered into urban planning, with an emphasis on sustainable equipment, which is made from recycled materials or solutions, minimising the impact on the environment.
Parks and recreation grounds remain the most common places where you’ll find outdoor gyms, and as council planners and housing developers invest in public health infrastructure, the number of outdoor gym facilities are set to grow. In addition to this educational institutions and business parks are becoming more aware of the benefits of outdoor workout facilities, as are high-end residential developments.
According to the report, growth is set to continue across all equipment types, including cardiovascular pieces like static bikes and steppers, even though these are traditionally associated with indoor gyms. Resistance training is also popular, and so is the demand for strength-training equipment including pull and push-up bars, which are also likely to rise. As more people recognise the importance of flexibility and balance, products which are designed to work on both these, such as beams and stretching stations, are increasingly becoming more popular too.
