Below we look at all of the many benefits this type of exercise has on the mind and body, providing you with an easy-to-follow workout plan that incorporates this brilliant piece of outdoor gym equipment, whilst highlighting the technical and user specifications.  

Body Benefits

The Fresh Air Fitness Elliptical Cross Trainer will get your whole body moving and provide you with the perfect cardiovascular workout. And it’ll improve your balance and coordination too. Giving similar results to running, it’ll burn calories and tone the body fast, but is very low-impact on your knee and ankle joints- making it accessible to all. 

The Elliptical Cross Trainer primarily works the muscle groups in your arms, legs, and glutes but also works other muscles in your core, shoulders and back. It allows users to set their own pace and choose a forward or backward motion to target different muscle groups. 

Using this piece of outdoor gym equipment shouldn’t be underestimated- the average calories burnt on an elliptical cross trainer is between 340 to 640 calories per hour depending on intensity! The faster you go, the more you’ll burn!

Toning

And you won’t just burn calories as the Elliptical Cross Trainer is great for toning both your arms and legs. 

The muscles in your legs and glutes will benefit as you drive your feet forwards and backwards to power the machine. Exercising your legs promotes better muscle conditioning, improves functional movements, strengthens your core, and can even prevent osteoporosis.

Your arm muscles will also benefit as you use them to push and pull the handles to support the motion of your legs.

Coordination & Balance

Using the Elliptical Cross Trainer also helps to improve your coordination and balance as it requires you to coordinate your arms and legs simultaneously and to engage your core to keep your balance.

Not only is maintaining good coordination and balance is essential in improving your fitness ability, it will also help with your cognitive ability to think and process information.

Burning Calories at the Outdoor Gym 

You are going to burn calories on our Elliptical Cross Trainer as it is a part of our cardiovascular range. 

The best thing about exercising on this fantastic piece of equipment is that it is completely free for you to use, saving you money on an expensive gym membership. They can be found in your local park, alongside other pieces of outdoor gym equipment, ready to use at whatever time suits you. 

Workout Plan 

  • Step onto the Elliptical Cross Trainer and hold onto the handles with each hand and begin to drive each of your feet and arms forward, or in reverse if you prefer, at a low intensity for 5 minutes to warm up. 
  • Switch to a medium intensity for 5 minutes. 
  • Alternate between high intensity (1 minute) and medium intensity (1 minute) for the next 5 minutes.
  • Cool down by reducing your speed and driving your legs and arms at a low intensity for 5 minutes.

Approximate calories burned: 200 calories in 20 minutes

Note: Don’t exert yourself beyond your limits. Talk to your doctor if you have issues with your balance, blood pressure, or heart health to make sure this type of exercise is safe for you. 

Technical Specification and Users

The Elliptical Cross Trainer is suitable for all abilities, from complete beginners to advanced outdoor gym users. It is 73kg in weight, has a length of 1464mm, a width of 637mm, and stands at 1541mm tall. This sizing allows for the equipment to be used by anyone over the age of 11. 

For children 11 years or younger, we also have a child-sized Elliptical Cross Trainer as part of our children’s range. The Children’s Elliptical Cross Trainer is suitable for kids in KS1 and KS2 and has been sized down to make it accessible to these age groups.
